RE CURRICULUM 2025
INTENT
At Ashlands Primary School, our RE curriculum enables every child to flourish and live ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10). It fosters dignity and respect, encouraging all to live well together. Through the teaching of RE, pupils engage with challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human.
Our curriculum is designed to help children revisit and build on their prior knowledge of different beliefs and practices across the school. Through engaging lessons, discussions, and reflective activities, we encourage pupils to appreciate diversity, foster empathy, and cultivate a deep respect for different worldviews. Our RE curriculum is deeply connected to our core values, ensuring that pupils develop not only a broad understanding of religious traditions but also a strong moral and spiritual foundation.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Ashlands Primary School, we are committed to providing a well-sequenced and engaging RE curriculum that fosters respect for others by exploring a range of religions and worldviews. Through carefully structured lessons, we develop children’s knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other faiths, ensuring accuracy and depth in their learning.
The purpose of our RE curriculum is to support pupils in developing their own thinking and understanding of world religions, helping them make sense of the world and their place within it. Our approach nurtures spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development by encouraging respectful discussions about diverse beliefs, including sensitive topics and ethical issues.
We provide an exciting and positive learning environment where children can explore faith, spirituality, and worldviews while reflecting on our core values of friendship, respect, trust, compassion, aspiration, and forgiveness.
As a church school, we believe it is essential for pupils to develop a strong understanding of the Christian faith, building on their knowledge from the Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Through Bible stories, creative activities, and thoughtful discussions, pupils explore how Christian teachings shape moral and spiritual development.
Alongside this, we introduce pupils to other faiths, fostering respect, compassion, and a sense of community. By learning about and celebrating the diversity of modern Britain, children gain a deeper understanding of how different cultures and religions shape people’s lives. Throughout their time at Ashlands Primary School, pupils study three major faiths in detail, revisiting them at greater depth as they progress.
Our RE curriculum nurtures spirituality, encourages thoughtful reflection, and equips children with the knowledge and respect needed to engage with the wider world.
IMPACT
Through RE lessons, pupils learn to articulate clear and coherent accounts of their personal beliefs, ideas, values, and experiences while respecting the rights of others to hold different views and ways of life. Our RE curriculum prepares children not only to engage with their local community but also to understand their place within a diverse region, national society, and the wider world.
At Ashlands Primary School, we aim for our RE curriculum to have a meaningful impact on pupils by:
- Extending their knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs.
- Developing their ability to use religious vocabulary effectively and interpret religious symbolism in various forms.
- Encouraging deeper reflection on life’s meaning, enabling them to offer thoughtful and informed insights into both religious and non-religious worldviews.
- Exploring fundamental questions of belief and values in relation to contemporary issues.
Our approach to RE nurtures spirituality, strengthens our sense of community, and reinforces our core values, helping children develop a respectful and open-minded perspective on the world.
