INTENT:

At Ashlands CofE Primary School, we seek to inspire our students with a foreign language curriculum that is not only exciting and engaging but also grounded in the values of curiosity, growth, and exploration. Through the Language Angels scheme, we aim to provide a broad, relevant, and enriching experience that nurtures each child’s potential, helping them to flourish in their language studies. Our hope is that this journey will ignite a deep love for languages, inspiring pupils to continue their language learning beyond Key Stage 2, and to view language as a gateway to understanding the world.

The curriculum will be regularly updated and reviewed to maintain its relevance and meet national DfE standards. It will focus on the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, teaching age-appropriate grammar to build a solid foundation for all pupils. This approach will empower students to apply their learning in meaningful ways, enhancing their overall academic growth and preparing them for a lifetime of language exploration.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Students will learn vocabulary, grammar, and language skills through age-appropriate topics, progressing from simple to more complex language. Teachers will monitor each child’s progress to ensure lessons are challenging and engaging.

The Language Angels curriculum is divided into three levels:

  • Early Language units are for Year 3 and introduce basic language concepts.
  • Intermediate units are for Years 4-5 and introduce more complex language, including grammar.
  • Progressive units are for Year 6 and challenge students with advanced language skills.

Each lesson will focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing, offering support and challenges at different levels. Students will revisit and build on previous knowledge while learning new grammar concepts. Teachers have a Progression Map and Grammar Grid to guide their teaching and ensure proper language development at the right stage.

The school has a curriculum map for teachers, outlining what each class will be taught throughout the year. Lessons will have clear objectives, include interactive tasks, and offer varying levels of challenge. There will be reading, writing, and grammar activities, with more complex tasks as students advance.

Students’ learning will be assessed regularly, and lessons will build on previous knowledge, helping them recall and use language with greater fluency.

IMPACT:

Language Angels units are designed to progressively challenge students as they move from Early Learning to Intermediate, and then to the most challenging Progressive units. Each level increases in complexity, requiring students to apply more knowledge and skills. Early Learning units start with basic phrases, while Progressive units involve longer texts and more advanced language use, such as forming complex sentences with conjunctions, adjectives, and opinions. Students will build on what they’ve learned, recycling and consolidating previous knowledge throughout their language learning journey. Teachers will use detailed long-term and short-term planning to ensure they teach the right lessons at the right time. This planning helps teachers know what to teach and how to teach it.

Pupils will track their own progress with clear learning goals and unit overviews, helping them see what they’ve learned and whether they’ve met their objectives. At the end of each unit, students will assess their progress in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and self-assess using provided grids. Students are expected to make good progress, which is tracked and reported to parents in line with school guidelines.
